About us

Fructal is an innovative and recognised company that consistently expresses its mission and the mission of its brands.
The key values that Fructal has been fostering in all the years of its operation are quality and a positive attitude to nature.

Fructal planted its apple tree on 5 October 1945, when five workers began distilling spirits in the abandoned building of a former
textile factory. Owing to the dedication and commitment of its employees, the company has grown and evolved
in every way at a breakneck pace, which was recognised by the consumers who were happy to support the company’s development.
Today, Fructal has 75-year-long tradition and has developed into a company that produces and
successfully markets high-quality products using the best fruit and other gifts of nature.
Fructal’s vision and mission are reflected in the superior quality of its products, as well as in its
protection of and respect for the environment and business excellence. At Fructal, we build partner relationships
with consumers and create a pleasant working environment for our employees. We also take an uncompromising stance
on environmental responsibility. We want the company to be a source of pride for the local community
and for the various audiences on all the markets where we operate.
Fructal proudly and bravely pursues its chosen path and, in harmony with nature, takes great pleasure in
surprising you - our loyal customers - time and time again.

1945-1954

The Beginnings

Fructal planted its first apple tree on 5 October 1945 when
Pokrajinsko podjetje za izvoz in predelavo sadja was established.

In the abandoned building of a former textile factory, five workers
began distilling spirits. Within two years, a smuggled kettle from Lipica,
a kettle from Ljubljana and an old German clothes boiler had been
replaced by a new, larger steam boiler. We installed our first
jam making kettles and the company’s products were presented abroad
for the first time.

In 1949, the company changed its name to Tovarna likerjev in
sadnih sirupov. We bought syrup making machines, a sill and a
dose sealing machine. After five years, the company had 133
employees. In 1953, we replaced the old marmalade and tomato
concentrate cooking devices with a modern stainless steel device
and the company assumed the name Flores - sadno
likerski kombinat Ajdovščina.

1955-1964

The Road to Industrial Production

At the beginning of its second decade of operation, the company
was renamed Fructal, Sadno-likerski kombinat Ajdovščina,
employing 251 people. Reconstruction and modernisation
works were carried out.

1962 was marked by the decision to transition from a craft-based and partly
industrialised mode of operation to full-scale industrial production.

1963 was a pivotal year for Fructal. That was the year when
construction work began on the new production facilities
(1,800 square metres in surface) and pulp and puree pools holding
925 tons of material. The company implemented the mechanisation and
modernisation of technological processes and internal
transport and installed the new Mayer beverage-filling line.
And so the foundations of Fructal’s quality and name were built.
The company’s rise to the top continued with the recognition
of its brands, the oldest of them being Dvojni C.

1965-1974

The Domestic Market Remains too Small

In the sixties and early seventies, Fructal invested heavily in
technology, developing it to perfection.

New juice and drink bottling lines contributed significantly to improving
the quality of Fructal’s products and making the production process shorter
and more efficient. The reconstruction was completed in 1969, consisting
of the new “Doypak” line for filling juice into pouches,
new filling machines and a new kettle.

In 1970, the company employed 732 people. At the time,
Fructal had the reputation of being the biggest fruit juice
producer in Yugoslavia.

In 1971, Fructal merged with the Ljubljana-based company Alko,
which enabled increased specialisation. From then on, Fructal
mostly produced intermediate goods, fruit juices, marmalades
and jams, while Alko produced alcoholic beverages, syrups and non-alcoholic
beverages. This was followed by a period of increased investment - the company
installed a cold store at its Frigos plant in Čelić (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
and bought a line for filling juices and drinks in “hypa” packaging.

The beginning of the production of baby juices under the Frutek brand
was another important milestone on the company’s successful journey.

1975-1984

Still Bigger, Still More Successful

This decade was marked by the expansion of production with new
product lines and investments.

In 1979, the company was renamed Fructal - Živilska industrija
Ajdovščina. In 1984, as demand for its products increased, Fructal
bought another cold store in Irig (Vojvodina).

In addition to juices, the Frutek brand expanded in 1982 to
include the Frutek baby food. This is a product that Fructal can
still proudly compare with similar products from major global
corporations in the food industry. The first wide-necked bottle
entered the market; we called it “jumbo”. In 1981, even though the
company was becoming increasingly specialised in the production
of fruit juices, the decision was reached to invest in a distillery
for the production of high-quality fruit distillates inDuplica
pri Kamniku. Education and training became one of Fructal’s key
aims, its personnel totalling 1494 employees in 1984.

1985-1994

A No Less Crucial Period for Fructal

Fructal’s product range was becoming wider and wider. In 1987, we enriched it
with a non-alcoholic drink under the brand Bibita.

In the late eighties, Bibita was joined by the 0.25-litre Tetra Brik
filling line. In 1991, we installed the first 1–litre Tetra Brik filling line,
which allowed the aseptic filling of cold juice, which was an important
technological improvement. New trends also set a fast pace for
Fructal - in 1993, 100-percent apple, carrot and peach juices were
introduced into production. An increasing number of juices contained
no added sugar and the production of fruit preparations for
the dairy industry began.

“Teta Liza” jams, produced at Frigos in Čelić (Bosnia and Herzegovina),
hit the shelves in 1989. Fructal never shied away from a challenge.
The result of consistent market research and the creative
work of our employees in the development laboratories were the
Frutabela bars, fruit and cereal snacks that were put on the market
in 1990. The year 1994 began with the slight pop of opening a wide-neck
200-millilitre bottle with a safety cap. The “twist-off” bottle won over
the consumers who wanted Fructal’s quality and the HORECA industry
was no less enthusiastic.

The critical period for Slovenia in the early nineties also
brought about changed business conditions for Fructal. The markets of the former
Yugoslavia were closing. In 1993, the company increased its exports to Russia,
the Czech Republic, Canada, USA and Italy. Fructal became a member of the Fruit Juice
Producers’ Association and was the first to obtain the SGF certificate
(Schutzgemeinschaft der Fruchtsaft-Industrie E.V.).

1995-2005

Continuing Our Successful Journey

In 1996, Fructal acquired the status of a public limited company
owned by 7,120 shareholders.

Quality being Fructal’s most important value, its quality management
system was approved in accordance with the ISO 9001 Standard. The company
obtained the certificate in 1995. The company successfully completed
all the subsequent certifications as well.

This period was also marked by several investments that contributed
to greater production quality and the expansion of our product lines.
Production and distribution-dependant affiliates were founded
in Sarajevo, Zagreb and Skopje. In 1996, the company refreshed
and unified the Fructal brand and in 1999 continued the brands
Frutek and Frutabela and the alcoholic line, which was expanded to
include two new brands, Prior and Matiss. 2000 saw the
rise of the Fruc drink, in wide-neck plastic bottles, which also
won Fructal the Effie Award for marketing effectiveness.

The year 2001 was an important milestone in the last decade.
Pivovarna Union, d.d., became the majority owner of Fructal. The HACCP
system was set up and certified for the process of the Frutek baby food
production and later introduced into all the production processes. The
investment in the KHS line was of key importance for the further growth
of Fructal, enabling juices, nectars and fruit drinks to be packaged
in a new blue 200-mililitre bottle that became a sales hit in 2003.

A new syrup filling line was opened at Fructal Mak in Macedonia.
The blue bottle won Fructal the “Slovenian Oscar for Packaging” Award. In
2005, the blue bottle won another award at the Effie Marketing Communication
Effectiveness Festival for the campaign “Passion has a new shape”.

2006-2014

In Step with the Trends

We introduced a number of improvements, thereby maintaining innovation all these years.

We turned our attention to narrower target user groups. We therefor developed
a new line of fruit and vegetable juices Fructal Natura. We refreshed the visual
appearance of the Frutabela bars. The Fruc family welcomed two new
low-sugar flavours – Easy Fruc. For children we developed the new Pingo
line. We introduced the Fructal Benefit line with functional additives
and 30% less calories.

We introduced a new category of “thick” juices blended from a variety
of fruits – the Fructal Smoothie – and presented an entirely new
natural drink made from fruit and water with no added sugar named
Frutiq. The Fructal brand won the title of SUPERBRAND and TRUSTED
BRAND in Slovenia and has kept it to this day.

With love and a whole lot of knowledge, we developed juices made
from freshly squeezed fruit - the Fructal Selection. Fructal Nature got a
makeover to make it clear at a glance that “Health is in the fruits of nature”.
We refreshed our line of ice teas and Frutabela bars. For mothers and
mothers-to-be, we offered juice Frutek mama.

The end of 2011 brought about another milestone in the company’s development
- the Serbian company Nectar became its new owner. The change in ownership further
intensified work on development projects. In cooperation with the Biotechnical Faculty
and a renowned Slovenian ethnologist, we developed the unique Slovenia vodka.
To help local producers, we introduced the new brand Vipavska breskev.
We breathed new life into our product range and refreshed the visual image of juices,
nectars and rich fruit drinks Fructal Superior and Fructal Classic. We invested
in the new Tetra Edge juice and nectar filling line, appropriate for on the go
consumption. In line with the new trends, Fructal Natura and Frutek were
expanded to include BIO product lines. We refreshed the visual image of
Frutabela, generic alcoholic beverages and Scandal.

In 2013, we were the general sponsor for the European Basketball Championship.

Markets

Export represents a very important share in Fructal’s business operations. Fructal’s brands are present in over 35 countries around
the world. In addition to the SEE markets, we are also very well represented in Italy and other EU markets. Outside the old continent, we are
present in Canada and the USA. We also regularly export to North African countries (Libya, Tunisia), as well as to the Middle East and the Far
East (Israel, China, etc.). Fructal’s position close to the ports in the Northern Adriatic serves as a good starting point for expansion to all foreign markets.
